We are excited to announce the launch of QleanUP (01/01/2026), a major Horizon Europe initiative dedicated to transforming how cities monitor, assess, and manage urban water quality. Selected under the HORIZON-CL6-2024-ZEROPOLLUTION call, QleanUP stands at the forefront of Europe’s efforts to protect urban waters, strengthen public health, and support the transition toward a zero-pollution, climate-resilient society.
Urban water systems across Europe are under increasing pressure from emerging contaminants, climate change, and rapid urbanisation. Traditional monitoring approaches are often too slow, fragmented, or costly to address these challenges. QleanUP responds to this urgent need by integrating next-generation sensors, AI-powered digital tools, and risk-based management strategies into a unified, interoperable platform for water utilities and authorities.
Building on previous EU investments in water quality and digitalisation, QleanUP brings together a consortium of leading universities, research institutes, technology providers, and water utilities from across Europe. Over 48 months, the project will test and demonstrate its innovations in five real-world demonstration sites -in Switzerland, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom- capturing a wide diversity of urban, climatic, and hydrologic conditions. This collaborative approach ensures that QleanUP’s solutions are practical, scalable, and ready for deployment across Europe.
Led by TU Delft, the consortium of 16 partners will work together to develop new sensing technologies for nutrients, heavy metals, pathogens, PFAS and microplastics; deploy AI-based soft sensors and digital twins; and deliver a FIWARE-based decision-support platform enabling real-time awareness and rapid response to contamination events.
