    ABOUT IMPETUS

impetusIMPETUS: Dynamic Information Management Approach for the implementation of Climate Resilient adaptation packages in European regions is a four year H2020 Innovation Action project funded by topic Building a low-carbon, climate resilient future: Research and innovation in support of the European Green Deal.

Turning climate commitments into action: As climate change progresses irrevocably, urgent measures are needed for building resilience and adaptive capacity. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, effective climate resilient regions cannot be built at expense of productive sectors, or without fair societal consensus.

IMPETUS will develop and validate a coherent multi-scale, multi-level, cross-sectoral climate change adaptation framework to accelerate the transition towards a climate-neutral and sustainable economy. IMPETUS Resilience Knowledge Boosters (RKBs) will build a robust Quintuple Helix stakeholders community (human dimension) complemented with reliable data and assessment methods to support decision and policy making (digital dimension). This will result in a community empowerment to codesign, assess, deploy, and monitor climate adaptation Innovation Packages, including R&I methodological, technological, governance, awareness, behavioural, economic, financial and pathway components.

IMPETUS RKBs will be deployed and validated in all 7 EU biogeographical regions (Continental, Coastal, Mediterranean, Atlantic, Arctic, Boreal, Mountainous) covering all Key Community Systems, climate threats, and multi-level governance.

IMPETUS consortium is made of selected local, regional and national public authorities; R&D organisations; SMEs and large enterprises; and, international organisations, to build upon, upscale and demonstrate a wide range of R&D solutions. IMPETUS has a clear earmark to ensure continuity after the project lifetime through consolidated and interconnected RKBs and communities at different scales.

    THREE PILLARS DEFINE THE PROJECT
    • Action: 15 technical and nature-based solutions, ranging from early warning systems and rapid risk appraisal of natural hazards to sand dune restoration
    • Information: Targeted analysis using the latest data sets, digital modelling and cutting-edge technology will determine the highest impact actions and decisions to take
    • Support: Collaborating with sectors, businesses and communities most at risk from climate change will help create solutions and define a transition that protects the environment and our economy

    KEY OBJECTIVES

    of the project include:

    • Both technical and non-technical innovations tailored to overcome specific challenges in each European region and ensure wider business, government and society are prepared to meet the challenges ahead
    • A ‘Regional Knowledge Booster’ space where all relevant stakeholders gather to co-create, demonstrate, monitor and assess the climate adaptation pathways for sustainable adaptation and resilience.
    • A digital dimension to process all available data and develop new insights using digital twins and machine learning tools
    • 15 technical and nature-based solutions identified for deployment, ranging from early warning systems and rapid risk appraisal of natural hazards to sand dune restoration

     OUR ROLE IN THE PROJECT

In IMPETUS, our role is to monitor and assess the climate adaptation pathways for sustainable adaptation and resilience through indicators and metrics, in order to accelerate the transition towards a climate-neutral and sustainable economy.

Also, we intend to identify and prioritise climate change ‘hot-spots’, in which analysis and assessment of resilience will be performed, and plan to develop a Strategic Resilience and Multi-Hazard Management tool to support the long-term view of resilience and identify dynamic adaptation pathways.

Furthermore, our role is to design and implement decentralized circular-economy inspired water/energy reuse innovations in the region of Attica, so that to help decision makers make better-informed decisions.

Finally, we will implement, monitor and evaluate an engagement and co-creation approach for achieving appropriate stakeholder representation in the Mediterranean demo site.
