Dr., Senior Researcher - Civil Engineer, Expert in Hydroinformatics methods and statistical/stochastic tools
Dr. Ioannis Tsoukalas holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (2014-2018), in the domain of non-Gaussian stochastic processes and optimization water-systems under uncertainty.
He has obtained a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece (March 2010) and a M.Sc. in Water Resources Science and Technology from NTUA (March 2012).
Since January 2021 he works as a research scientist at TETHYS consulting, while he is a research associate (since September 2012) at NTUA, working both at the School of Civil Engineering in the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, as well as at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the NTUA.
Furthermore, he holds a post-doctorate Scholarship funded by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). During his time in NTUA he has worked as a researcher in several research programs, both European (extrAIM, EIFFEL, STOP-IT; as a WP leader, iWidget, DESSIN, PEARL) and National (KLIMENESTOS, ALPINE, PROCRUSTES).
Dr. Tsoukalas research interests concern the development of hydroinformatics methods and statistical/stochastic tools for the management and optimization of systems under uncertainty with an emphasis on large-scale analysis of big datasets of weather variables. More specifically, his work is focused on the development of a) statistical/stochastic methods and models for the analysis, modelling, forecasting, and (multi- scale) simulation (and disaggregation) of stochastic processes (e.g., hydrometeorological, weather), and b) surrogate-based optimization algorithms, (inspired from the recent developments in machine learning) with a focus on multi-objective problems.
His ambition is contributing in, improving decision making under uncertainty, risk analysis, as well as uncertainty quantification. In his research career so far, (November 2014 - May 2021), he has authored 53 publications, from which 26 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (incl., Water Resources Research, Journal of Hydrology and Environmental Modelling and Software) and 27 papers/posters/presentations in international conferences.
